A Story of Hope

A congregation shaped by faith, courage, and grace.

A church born out of conviction.

In late 1976, theological differences within a local Lutheran congregation led Pastor Victor Mesenbring and many families to conclude they could no longer continue in good conscience. In January 1977, approximately seventy families gathered and made a courageous decision: they would begin again.

On January 23, 1977, the first worship service of the new congregation was held at Antioch Lutheran Church at Thirteen Mile and Farmington Roads, which generously offered its space. Within two weeks, members pledged $50,000 toward the new ministry. The congregation initially organized as Farmington Hills Lutheran Church and operated as an independent congregation.

What began in uncertainty quickly became a community shaped by faith, resolve, and shared purpose.

Laying the Foundation

By March 1977, the congregation secured a second temporary location at the educational building of University Hills Christian Reformed Church on Farmington Road, where worship services and education classes were established during a season of transition.

In September 1978, members voted to purchase a one-story, three-bedroom house situated on twelve acres at 39200 West Twelve Mile Road in Farmington Hills. Later that fall, a building committee was formed, and on December 10, 1978, ground was broken for a new sanctuary. By the end of that month, the congregation had moved onto the property.

The sanctuary was dedicated in March 1979, and construction continued through the following year. In February 1980, the first worship service was held in the completed sanctuary, marking a new chapter in the congregation's life.

Growing with Faith

In 1988, Hope became part of the newly formed Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, formally aligning with the Lutheran body whose direction had shaped its founding. The decision reflected both continuity and clarity about the congregation’s identity and mission.

In November 1990, the congregation voted to begin planning for a major expansion. Under the theme Giving Hope to Tomorrow, members committed nearly $500,000 in 1994 toward the completion of a new sanctuary, narthex, family life center, classrooms, choir room, and restrooms. Architectural plans were approved, and construction contracts were awarded, marking another season of bold investment in the future.

On Easter Sunday, April 7, 1996, a groundbreaking ceremony was held. The expanded church that rose from that moment remains the place where members gather for worship, learning, and fellowship today.

The Story Continues

What began in 1977 as a step of conviction became a congregation rooted in faith, generosity, and shared purpose. From borrowed spaces to a permanent home, each milestone reflected a community willing to trust God’s leading and invest in the future.

That same spirit continues to shape Hope today. The foundation laid in those early years still supports the congregation's worship, service, and community life. The story of Hope is still being written, and each new generation adds its own chapter.
