Strategic Planning Council

The Strategic Planning Council helps guide the shared work of Hope Lutheran Church through faithful leadership, thoughtful planning, and responsible stewardship.

Council Focus

  • Supporting Hope’s mission and ministries
  • Planning for the congregation’s future
  • Encouraging transparency and communication
  • Stewarding church resources responsibly

How the council serves Hope

The Strategic Planning Council serves as Hope Lutheran Church’s elected leadership body. Working alongside pastoral and staff leadership, the council helps oversee the congregation’s mission, ministry planning, finances, facilities, and long-term priorities.

The council also helps bring important matters to the congregation, supports communication between ministry areas, and encourages thoughtful planning for Hope’s future.

COUNCIL COMMUNICATIONS

Council Updates

In the interest of greater transparency, the Strategic Planning Council is sharing an update following our monthly meetings. These messages will summarize major discussions and decisions, while also recognizing the work of Council members, pastors, staff, ministry leaders, and volunteers throughout the church.

Latest Update July 2026 Council Update Meeting held July 21, 2026

At its July 21 meeting, the Council discussed the following:

MOSES Presentation

The Council welcomed DeJuan Bland from MOSES, who shared information about the organization’s voter education efforts. See mosesmi.org for more information regarding their work. The Council has yet to decide if and how Hope will participate.

Pastoral Transition

The Council reflected on Pastor Krister’s final Sunday at Hope and expressed appreciation for everyone who helped celebrate his time with us. His final day in the church office is Friday, July 24.

Pastor Erik’s first day at Hope will be Monday, August 3, and his first Sunday leading worship will be August 9. His installation will take place during worship on Sunday, August 30.

Members of the congregation are encouraged to join us on August 9 to welcome Pastor Erik and on August 30 for his installation.

Pastor’s Report

Pastor Krister submitted a written report reflecting on his ministry at Hope and the congregation’s life together.

The Council also received an update on Wednesday summer worship. Hope’s final Wednesday evening gathering will be August 19, with fellowship at 6:00 p.m. and worship at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to participate.

Average June Sunday worship attendance was 77 on-site and 71 online.

The Council thanks Pastor Krister for his ministry and contributions to Hope.

Financial Report

The Council reviewed Hope’s financial position through June.

General Fund giving was about 28 percent below the budget approved by the congregation last November, resulting in a year-to-date shortfall of about $81,000.

Cash on hand was $144,236 as of June 30, compared with $193,081 at the end of 2025. This represents approximately 93 days of operating cash.

These figures show that giving is not currently keeping pace with Hope’s expenses. Stronger giving during the second half of the year will help preserve Hope’s reserves and provide greater financial stability.

Members who are able are encouraged to maintain their regular General Fund giving to help strengthen Hope’s financial position during the remainder of the year. hopeon12.com/give

Hope Forward Fund

The Hope Forward Fund has received $4,773 from 13 donors toward its $40,000 goal. The campaign continues through September 1.

The fund is a mid-year stewardship effort responding to the giving shortfall that developed during the transition between senior pastors. Its purpose is to strengthen Hope’s overall financial position as Pastor Erik begins his ministry and provide a more stable foundation while he works with the congregation to grow membership and sustainable giving.

Those who are able are encouraged to consider making a special gift in addition to their regular General Fund giving. More information is available at hopeon12.com/hope-forward-fund .

Hope Fest

Planning is underway for Hope Fest on Sunday, September 13. Kristine Cherry and Augusta Stephens are co-leading the effort.

This year’s event will welcome Pastor Erik, begin recognizing Hope’s upcoming 50th anniversary, and provide an opportunity for fellowship and connection.

Kristine and Augusta are looking for members who would like to help plan the event.

Looking Ahead

The Council began early conversations about Hope’s 50th anniversary in January 2027 and the congregation’s stewardship effort for 2027. More information will be shared as those plans develop.
